Day 147: Intro to Meteorology April 19, 2007

Posted by Admin in Meteorology.

After concluding the geology unit with yesterday’s test (remember: if you missed the test, you must schedule a time with me to make it up THIS WEEK!) we began the meteorology unit in class today. For starters, we discussed the four essential truths of meteorology:

  1. The sun shines
  2. Hot air rises
  3. Water changes phase
  4. The world goes around

All of the other details that we’ll cover over the next 5 weeks come from these four essential truths. We then discussed the composition of the atmosphere: 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen, 1% other gasses (carbon dioxide, water vapor, argon, etc…), and finally, some non-gasses: dust, ash, smoke, dirt, sea salt, water droplets, etc…

There was no homework assigned tonight. Tomorrow we’ll continue examining the atmosphere by discussing it’s properties (temperature and pressure) and layers.
