Day 111 – Mineral Characteristics, Day 2 February 15, 2007

Posted by Admin in Geology.

After a couple of days away, we resumed work on the Mineral Characteristics guided notes today by discussing the second half: hardness, transparency, density, and special properties. Among the special properties are some tests that provide positive ID for a few minerals, such as the acid test as a positive identification for calcite. There is no homework for tonight.

Tomorrow we will complete the dichotomous key lab which is an exercise designed to give us more experience with using a classification key. Then next week (Tuesday) we will use another dichotomous key to identify ten mineral samples using the characteristics we covered this week. We will also have a quiz on mineral characteristics on Wednesday before we segue into the rock cycle.
