Day 106: Minerals and Crystals February 8, 2007

What are minerals and crystals?  Those were the questions of the day as we continue to segue into the geology unit.  We defined a mineral by asking four questions instead of detailing a textbook defintion:

  1. Does it have a crystalline structure?
  2. Is it a solid?
  3. Does it exist in nature?
  4. Is it inorganic?

If you can answer “yes” to all four questions, the material in question is indeed a mineral.  Next week we will learn the defining characteristics of minerals and begin testing for those characteristics.

After the notes, students spent about 15 minutes working on the “Journey to the Center of the Earth” stories.  Remember, the stories should be at least one page long and typed or neatly hand written.  They must include detailed information on each of the layers of the Earth and the properties that you would encounter as you travel through them.  For even more detail on how to nail an “A” on this story, check out the Journey to the Center of the Earth Rubric.
